PRESS STATEMENT
KA PEDRING FADRIGON, KPML President
JULY 20, 2009

STATE OF THE URBAN POOR ADDRESS
TO BE LAUNCHED

Instead of listening to the report card, instead of the state of the nation, of the President, we, the urban poor from different parts of the country, chose to hold our State of the Urban Poor Address on July 27, 2009. We will prove the President wrong when she stated that “Ramdam ang Kaunlaran”, because she is probably the only one who felt the progress of this country. What we felt is continued misery and poverty.

The President, during her first SONA in 2001, promised 150,000 houses yearly to be built, her target was not met, not because there’s no budget, but because she is not serious in addressing this problem. As of now, there’s still 3.8 million houses backlog.

She even promised 1 million jobs every year, but what does the urban poor got? The urban poor cannot apply at call centers because they are not qualified. Contractualization is rampant.

When the President declared in her July 26, 2004 SONA that she is pushing for the decongestion of Metro Manila, many urban poor have been affected and many houses were demolished.

The GMA administration is not serious enough to address the problems of the urban poor, and most of the times, their solution is always housing, instead of the three components which are housing, job and social service. If one of the three is gone, the problem of the poor will not be diminished.

As of now, poverty is still rampant, according to IBON Foundation, 34% of the population or 30 million are poor, and 65 million Filipinos or 80% of the population survives at about P100 per day or US$2 per day. According to the National Statistics Coordinating Board (NCSB), 1 out of 3 Filipinos are poor, or 32.9 of the 88.6 million lived in poverty.

Added misery for the urban poor is if the present Constitution will be changed through Con Ass because the present crop of representathives wants to make 100% foreign ownership of the land, media, school, hospitals, and others. If this happens, the urban poor cannot have its own land to build their houses because the foreign corporations owned it already.

The urban poor suffered much from the hands of Arroyo government: political killings, high prices of rice, transport hike, high prices of medicines that’s why many urban poor died because they cannot pay for the high prices of medicines they need. So at the last SONA of GMA, we collectively assailed Mrs. Arroyo and her trapo cohorts for their uselessness to the country. They are only living for their selfish interest and for the interest of their capitalists’ friends. The urban poor is really angry. This government should be held upside down.
